Load of the Month: Road Freight of Chemicals and Bulk Storage Trailers

This past month, we self-delivered an integrated logistic service to one of our longest serving clients. Our client required the immediate uplift of their consolidated chemicals and drilling equipment from our Freeport facility in Mtwara, Tanzania, to support their clients drilling operations in Naivasha, Kenya.

The load consisted of:

  • 100 tons of Cement
  • 8.95 tons of Chemicals
  • 1 x Tank Plant Press Cutting unit
  • 1 x 30 Ton Truck Twin HT400 unit
  • 4 x 15 Ton Bulk Storage Trailer units

To this end, we provided material handling and road freight services to execute the job. At the Freeport, we utilized our 3 and 16 Ton forklifts to load the chemicals and tank plant cutting unit onto 10 trucks; 5 trucks for the cement and tank plant press cutting unit, 4 were back trailers and 1 lowbed for the Truck Twin HT400 unit.

As this shipment was needed urgently on site by the client so as to maintain oil and gas operations, we made sure to prioritize and work around the clock to deliver the cargo as expected. This was a complex job that required us to obtain Out Of Gauge (OOG) and chemical permits within a limited time period in order to move the cargo from Mtwara through the Namanga border and into Kenya. The OOG cargo had to be re-routed away from the transit route with special permission and permits required and obtained from both Customs and the Ministry of Works. The timely execution and immaculate communication between our warehousing, equipment rental and road freight teams in delivering this service highlighted the professionalism and high level of service we deploy to our clients.

Introducing Our New Tracking Division

Similar to what’s seen in the movie Eagle Eye, we are relentless in our efforts to track our assets at all times, in order to give the reassurances to our clients that they require. To complement our GPS system, this month we have added a dedicated tracking team to the workforce.

The Alistair Group Tracking Team are a group of young and dynamic youth who are designated with the specific task of tracking vehicles to ensure that drivers are adhering to our daylight driving only rules, and that we know immediately of any delays. The 12-strong team work on a shift rotation to ensure that we have updated information every day of the week for each of the vehicles under our control (240 on average). The team calls each driver, at minimum, twice a day and checks their reported position versus the Global Positioning System (GPS) trackers in their trucks.

The tracking team helps us improve efficiency by achieving faster transit times, quicker reporting of incidents, improved response time to challenges faced on the road and consequently a better customer experience.

As we like to say, every day, a better way!

Load of The Month: Caterpillar Excavator 6015

This month we transported a Caterpillar excavator from Dar es Salaam to Namoya for one of our clients who required the excavator urgently on site for their ongoing mining operations.

With the excavator consisting of an undercarriage measuring 4.6 meters wide, we conducted a route risk assessment prior to the move so as to ensure the narrow roads in DRC allowed for the safe movement of our trucks to site. Once this was established, we disassembled the excavator and loaded it out on 6 trucks accompanied by 2 escort vehicles.

Alistair Group works to make Africa work better; as such we aim to grow with the sub-Saharan Africa logistics sector and look forward to receiving more abnormal cargo.

Load of the Month: Dar to Lilongwe

This month we transported two sets of farm tractors from Dar es Salaam to Lilongwe covering a distance of 1,500 kilometers. The tractors were cleared by our in-house clearing team, stripped from the flatrack containers, and then loaded onto flatbed trailers.

Due to cargo exceeding the width requirements, permits and escort vehicles were required.  Despite the small complexities, the cargo was delivered within ten days to meet the client’s requirements.
